Third Period BSU Rally Spurs 3-3 Tie with North Dakota

BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji Sate University women’s hockey team showed true grit and determination today as they used a three-goal third period to tie with the University of North Dakota, 3-3.

The Sioux, playing in their first game as an NCAA varsity program, came out of the gates quickly putting the Beavers in an early hole. Just 1:42 into the first period Liz Funk found the net with help from Lauren Myers and Jess Kovacevich to give UND a 1-0 lead. They would come back just eight minutes later to score a power play goal from Myers with help from Funk and Natasha Holt to put the Bemidji State down 2-0 as the first period ended.

In the second period UND would add to their lead sliding another goal past the Beaver goaltender Bre Dedrickson to take a 3-0 lead and to knock Dedrickson out of the game. At the 6:01 mark of the second period, BSU changed goaltenders, sending Anik Coté between the pipes. She would finish the period making three saves and holding the Sioux scoreless.

The Beavers would start their comeback early in the third period when Carly Napier scored her first collegiate goal as she tipped a Mandy Bambrough pass past the outstretched Sioux goaltender to bring BSU within two. Bemidji State would continue its third period comeback when Amber Fryklund would swat the pass from Lill Raynard into the net with 3:31 remaining in regulation. With just 45 seconds to go and the score still 3-2, the Beavers would pull Coté to add an extra attacker. The decision would pay off as Guylaine Haché found the back of the net with her shot from Fryklund and Alicia Kinsman to tie the game, 3-3 with just 21 seconds remaining in the game.

In their first overtime game of the season, the Beavers could not take advantage of opportunities and Coté would make four saves to end the overtime period and the game locked in a 3-3 tie.

The tie brings the Beavers record to 1-3-1 over all and 1-1-0 in the WCHA. They will be back in action Oct. 25 and 26 when they travel to Mankato, Minn. to take on Minnesota State University-Mankato in WCHA competition. The Puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. Friday, with the two teams meeting again Saturday in a 4:05 p.m. start.
