Strength and Conditioning

Mission Statement

The overall mission of the Beaver Strength and Conditioning staff is to improve athletic performance while reducing the risk of injury.

The Beaver strength and conditioning staff will accomplish this by implementing evidence based programming in a safe environment. The Beaver strength and conditioning program gives student athletes this opportunity by emphasizing sport specific programs focused on injury prevention, functional strength, speed, agility, power, endurance, mobility and recovery.

Beaver Hockey Weight Room

The Beaver Hockey Weight room is home to both Men's and Women's Hockey and has been since the Sanford Center was built in 2010.  Besides having a great view with floor to ceiling windows, this weight room also features four double-sided racks with four platforms, four Keiser Pneumatic Functional Trainers, eight sets of Powerblock dumbbells, ten Keiser Bikes, two treadmills, and an elliptical.  The weight room also features a 20-yard section of turf.  Other equipment used in training include kettlebells, bands, chains, med. balls, Swiss balls, boxes, USSR incline boxes, glute ham. racks, landmine anchors, TRX straps, ropes, SS Yoke Bars, Hex. Bars, and slider boards.

The John Glas Weight room is home for 12 of the 14 teams at BSU and sees over 700 athletes cumulatively per week.  Main features of the weight room are five racks, five platforms, four benches, and four glute-ham racks.  Recent equipment upgrades include a brand new set of dumbbells from 5 lb pairs up to 125 lb pairs, four Legend Fitness glute-ham racks, five 350 lb sets of Olympic bumper plates, bars, and plate racks, five SS Yoke Bars, five hex bars, five TRX Straps, ropes, and a brand new stereo.  Other equipment used in training include medicine balls, Swiss balls, bands, chains, boxes and belts.

Strength and Conditioning Staff

John Rehfeld - Director of Strength and Conditioning
John Rehfeld
Since originally joining Bemidji State in November 2020, Rehfeld worked directly with men's and women's basketball, soccer, men's and women's golf, and tennis, in addition to assisting with implementation of strength and conditioning programs for football, baseball, softball and men's and women's hockey. He was promoted to director of strength and conditioning in July 2021.

Rehfeld came to Bemidji State after serving as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant coach at Western Illinois University from January until November 2020. He worked directly with baseball, softball and men's and women's soccer, in addition to assisting the football program.

Rehfeld previously worked with the Mississippi State University athletics department as a strength and conditioning intern from June 2019 until January 2020. Rehfeld began his coaching career at his alma mater, St. Ambrose University, in January 2018 as an intern before being promoted to co-coordinator of strength and conditioning in August 2018.

A native of Oak Lawn, Ill., Rehfeld earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology and exercise science from St. Ambrose in 2018 before attaining a master's degree in exercise physiology from St. Ambrose in 2019. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds certification in CPR, AED use and First Aid by the American Heart Association.

Rehfeld was a member of the St. Ambrose football program for four seasons from 2014-17 as a linebacker and defensive lineman, garnering two Mid-States Football Association All-Academic selections.
