GRAND FORKS, N.D. - For the second straight game the Bemidji State University women’s hockey team set the tone early getting out to a 3-0 lead over the Fighting Sioux. Today junior goaltender
Anik Coté added her first shut out of the season to take the series finale 4-0 and to complete the sweep over the University of North Dakota.
Bemidji State picked up right were it left off the previous night as
Caesare Stimson scored her second goal of the year, and the series, off a pass from
Lill Raynard and
Lisa Peters to put the Beavers up 1-0. At the 18:28 mark of the period
Katie Ward fed
Betsy Hegland for her second tally of the year to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead as they headed into the first period intermission.
Senior forward
Kerri McEwen scored BSU’s third goal of the afternoon at the 4:03 mark of the second period. BSU head coach
Bruce Olson called the goal “one of the prettiest goals I have seen.” Taking the pass from Raynard, McEwen skated down the ice with only the UND goaltender, Margaret-Ann Hinkley, between her and the back of the net. She offered three or four “deeks” and beat the goaltender for the score.
Amber Fryklund would put the Beavers up 4-0 with 2:30 remaining in the period on an unassisted goal. The goal was her fifth of the season and the 48th of her career. She now has 98 points in a Bemidji State University uniform.
The teams would skate to a scoreless third period. North Dakota had the upper hand out shooting the Beavers 9-4 but Coté would turn every attempt away to end the game 4-0 and complete her first shut out of the season and the second of her career.
After the game Olson was happy with the overall performance of the team. “It was a great team effort all-around. Anik played very well in the net for us getting the shut out. Our defense also played their best game as a unit and we got scoring out of our top three lines of forwards. It was a very strong showing for the Beaver Hockey team.”
The win evens Bemidji State’s record to 5-5-2 and the Beavers are 3-3-1 in WCHA competition. The team will take the next week off and will return home to play the No. 7 Wisconsin Badgers December 2-3 at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Saturday’s game will begin at 5:05 p.m. and the puck will drop on the second game of the series at 3:05 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
