Duluth, Minn. - For the second-straight night the two-time defending National Champion University of Minnesota-Duluth shut the Bemidji State Beavers out. Hanne Sikio led the Bulldogs with three goals and two assists in the 10-0 win.
In a game against one of the elite offensive teams in the NCAA, playing one-player short is not somewhere a team wants to find itself. Tonight BSU set a school record for penalty minutes spending 42 minutes in the box and giving UMD eight power play opportunities. The Bulldogs made the Beavers pay for that advantage scoring three power play goals and firing 28 shots at BSU goaltenders.
The No. 2 Bulldogs came out from the drop of the puck to pick up right where they left off last night. Jenny Hempel got the Bulldogs on the board just 2:27 second into the game and that was all the Bulldogs would need as the combination of Patricia Sautter and Lisa Hagen in the net for UMD turned away all 10 of the Beavers shots on goal.
Bemidji State played the rest of the first period well holding off the attack by the Bulldogs. After the first period of play the Beavers found themselves down 1-0. But the second period belonged to Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs scored seven goals in the second topped by Amelia Hradsky and Hanne Sikio who both notched two goals in the period. UMD would add two more in the third.
The loss drops the Beavers record to 5-8-3 overall and 3-6-3 in the WCHA as Minnesota-Duluth brings their record to 15-1-2 overall and extends their WCHA record to 11-0-1. The shut out is the third-straight game in which the Beavers have not been able to find the back of the net. BSU was shut out in the second game of the Wisconsin series 4-0 (Dec. 7), and in both games versus Minnesota-Duluth 9-0 (Dec. 13) and 10-0 tonight. The streak marks the second-longest streak of the sort in the history of BSU hockey and the fist time since Feb. 26, 1999 that the Beavers have been shut out three straight times.
This closes out the first half off the WCHA season for both teams as they have over three weeks before they next hit the ice. Beavers host Minnesota State-Mankato and Dartmouth travels to Duluth to take on the Bulldogs Jan. 10-11.
