BEMIDJI, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team returned from a two week break to take on the No. 9 University of Wisconsin Badgers tonight at the John Glas Fieldhouse. Not ant envious position to be in but BSU head coach Bruce Olson said it was one the team was ready for.
The Beavers came out of the gates slow, as could be expected from a team that had not played in 19 days. But the team scored one in the second and one early in the third the third to take a two-goal advantage.
After skating to a scoreless first period, the Beavers came out in the second to take a one-goal lead. Alicia Kinsman got Bemidji State on the board 14:05 in to the period when she picked off a Badger pass and skated the puck to the other end of the ice beating Jackie MacMillan for the unassisted goal.
The Beavers went up 2-0 when Nicky Kluck scored her first goal of the season 2:47 into the third period. She took a pass form Andrea Carlson and found the net. But the Badgers would come back.
At the 10:12 mark of the third Wisconsin scored when Amy Vermeulen took a pass from Jackie Friesen and Kathy Devereaux. Just 58 seconds later they would score again to knot the score at 2-2. Sis Paulsen scored her second goal of the season as she picked up the rebound and put it passed Jill Luebke for the goal.
“Wisconsin is too good a team to give power play opportunities. They handle the puck well and are good passers,” commented Olson after the tie. Power plays were the downfall of the Beavers tonight. Going 0-3 in the man advantage, the Beavers gave up two goals on the penalty allowing the Badgers back into the game.
The tie brings the Beavers record to 5-5-3 over all and 3-3-2 in the WCHA. The teams will meet again tomorrow (Dec. 7) in the John Gas Fieldhouse as BSU looks to take its first victory from the Badgers in that building. The puck is set to drop at
2:05 p.m.
