OMAHA, Neb. - Bemidji State (3-6) and Michigan
Tech (4-6) exchanged two games before BSU was able to stand
strong and pull out a 3-2 win this afternoon. Scores were
30-28, 17-30, 31-29, 19-30 and 15-8.
In games 1-4, the winning squad got off to an early lead.
BSU had 5-1 and 10-4 runs to open up games one and two. Meanwhile,
MTU got going with 6-1 and 5-1 scoring streaks in games two
and four. In the deciding game, the Beavers notched the count
at 4-4 before they went on a 12-4 run to close the match.
Sophomore middle blocker Heather Haugan (Lanesboro, Minn.)
notched a career high with 27 kills and 12 digs in the affair,
while junior outside hitter Lisa Smith (Hastings, Minn.) chipped
in 20 kills and 17 digs. There were five Beavers with 10+
digs as they were led by defensive specialist Kristine Engman
(Virginia, Minn.) with 18 digs. Sophomore setter Kristin Smith
(Rockford, Ill.) put in a career effort with her 57 assists
and four service aces. In addition, sophomore outside hitter
Kelly Piper (Eagan, Minn.) added 10 digs.
Next up for BSU will be the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference opener as it will travel to Northern State and
take on Minnesota-Morris the following night. Action takes
place on Sept. 20-21 with both matches scheduled for 7:00
p.m.
