BSU Falls to Southwest State in Home Opener

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bemidji State University opened its home season today with a 5-1 loss to Southwest State University. The game was the conference opener for both teams.

Southwest State found the net first when Jenny Bowman beat the Beaver goal keeper, Niki Dalka, in the 26th-minute. Bowman was assisted on the play by sophomore, Nadia AbuAyed who led both teams in scoring. She recorded two goals and added two assist for 6 points on the game.

The Beavers came out in the second half and played more aggressively. They were able to keep the Mustang offense to a minimum and got themselves on the score board. Lindsey Natwick scored the lone goal for the Beavers at the 66-minute mark off a dead ball kick. Natwick’s kick found the net just over the SSU goalkeeper’s outstretched hands. But it was too little too late for BSU as the goal would get the Beavers on the board, but time would run out with Bemidji State down, 5-1.

Assistant coach Oliver Twelvetrees commented, “The girls really played well in the second half. At halftime we set to win the second half and I think we did.”

Bemidji State goal keeper Niki Dalka left the game due to injury in 23 minute of the game. She was replaced by freshman defensive play Cristina Egnell. Defending the goal for the first time since her freshman year of high school, Egnell made 11 saves for the Beavers.

The Bemidji State University soccer team will be in action again tomorrow (Sept. 29) at 1:00 p.m. when Wayne State University comes to the BSU Field for the Beavers second NSIC match.
