MOORHEAD, MINN. -- The Bemidji State (14-15, 6-7 NSIC) volleyball team never could muster a rally in getting downed, 3-0, tonight by Minnesota State, Moorhead (16-11, 8-5 NSIC) at Alex Nemzek Hall. Scores were 32-30, 30-28, 30-18.

Bemidji State never led by more than two points the entire match.

The Dragons controlled game one early with a quick 5-0 lead. Bemidji State came to within a point after a kill by junior Kelly Piper before an 11-6 MSUM run broke the game open for a short period. BSU made things interesting notching four straight points, including two consecutive service aces by senior Lisa Smithto tie the score at 29-29. However, the hosts tallied three of the game’s final four points.

Game two began with both clubs swapping the first eight points. Then, the Dragons creeped out to a 25-22 advantage, forcing the guests into a time-out. Like game one, Bemidji State fought back to a count of 28-29 before MSUM took the game with the final tally.

MSU, Moorhead had no problems in the third game, shooting out to a 10-3 lead fueled by a 7-0 run. After a kill by freshman Lindsey Bromenshenkel brought BSU within four at 6-10, the Dragons responded with a 15-6 spurt. Two knock-downs by junior Heather Haugen was not enough for the Beavers as they have now lost their last four in Moorhead, Minn.

Leading the way for Bemidji State was Haugen with 12 kills. Piper added eight kills and 16 digs while junior Kristin Smith had 20 assists.

Bemidji State welcomes #13 Minnesota Duluth Saturday for the final home match of the 2003 season. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at BSU Gymnasium. It will also mark Senior and Parents Day as McDougall, Peterson and Lisa Smith play their final match as a Beaver.


NOTE: In the all-time series, Bemidji State still maintains a 55-52-1 record against Minnesota State, Moorhead, but sliding to 7-18 in Moorhead, Minn., since 1975...Kristin Peterson had her streak of 10 or more kills stopped at 10 consecutive contests, she had two on the night...BSU coach Kim Falkenhagen received a yellow card in the third game...Bemidji State dropped to 4-3 when playing on Tuesdays this season...The sweep comes after a 3-0 loss at Minnesota-Crookston last Friday, the first back-to-back league sweeps since Winona State and Concordia-St. Paul did the same, Oct. 4 & 5 of last season...The Beavers fall to 13-3 when having more service aces than their opponent; they had eight compared to six by MSU Moorhead.
