DULUTH, Minn. - The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team traveled to Duluth, Minn. today for the second half of a home-and-home series with the University of Minnesota-Duluth. The Bulldogs came out on top for the second-straight day as they beat the Beavers 11-3 and completed the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep.
Hanne Sikio Led the way for the Bulldogs collecting two goals and five assists. Her seven-point performance is the best output for a single player since Megan Hunter of the University of Wisconsin recorded nine points versus the Beavers Nov. 18, 2000.
The Bulldogs got on the board first when Caroline Ouellette scored her third goal of the series on a power-play opportunity just over seven minutes into the game. But The Beavers would fight back at the 8:54 mark of the first period when Lill Raynard scored her ninth goal of the year with an assist from Caesare Stimson to knot the game 1-1.
Minnesota-Duluth reclaimed the lead less than a minute later (9:36) as Nora Tallus recorded her sixth goal of the year. Tallus was assisted on the play by Maria Rooth and Erika Holst. Rooth Became the All-time leading scorer at the University of Minnesota-Duluth with the assist, amassing 223 to overtake Dan Lempe’s (1976-80) 222 career-points with the Bulldogs.
Hanne Sikio would add to the lead with a goal at the 10:24 mark of the period with help from Jenny Potter and Satu Kiipeli. The goal put the Bulldogs up 3-1.
Bemidji State would attempt to stay in the game scoring another goal 14:54 into the first frame when Alicia Kinsman scored her fifth goal of the season. Fellow seniors Lisa Peters and Kerri McEwen were credited with assists on the play.
Sikio would add another goal with help from Amelia Hradsky and Potter before Rooth closed out the period with a goal at the 19:59 mark to stretch the Bulldog lead to 5-2 at the end of the first period.
UMD would start the second stanza just as they finished the first--with a Rooth goal. Potter and Ouellette each collected their second assist of the game on the goal at 10:45 of the second period. Krista MacArther would add the only other score of the second at 18:35 with assist from Potter and Sikio.
Bemidji State made a goaltender change in the beginning of the third period in an attempt to slow down the Bulldogs swapping Jill Luebke for Anik Coté who in 40:00 minutes of play recorded 23 saves for BSU. Despite the change between the pips for the Beavers, the Bulldogs would score two goals in the opening three minutes of the third frame to bring the score to 9-2 as Potter scored her 30th of the season with help from Sikio and MacArther recorded her second goal of the game assisted by Hradsky and Sikio.
Amber Fryklund would capitalize on the Bulldog penalty at the 13:49 mark of the third period when she beat the Bulldog's goaltender for the Beaver’s first power-play goal of the series. Raynard and Jenny Schnickel were credited with assist on the play as Bemidji State brought the score to 9-3. But UMD would score twice in the final five minutes of play. Rooth collected her third goal of the game at the 15:28 mark of the third and Hanne Sikio would get her fifth assist on Potter’s second goal of the game as the Bulldogs put the Beavers away 11-3.
The loss drops the Beavers season record to 9-15-6 and 5-12-5 in the WCHA. Despite the pair of losses this weekend, due to Minnesota State-Mankato losing two games, the Beavers can finally make plans for the WCHA Final Five in Grand Forks N.D. March 6-9.
The Beavers will be in action next weekend (Feb. 28- Mar. 1) when they travel to The Ohio State University to take on the Buckeyes in a series that will likely decide the seeding for both the Buckeyes and the Beavers. BSU will go in to Columbus, Ohio trailing OSU by one point for fourth place in the WCHA and the fourth seed in the tournament.
