ST. CLOUD, MINN. -- Bemidji State (9-9, 1-2 NSIC) dropped
a non-conference contest to St. Cloud State (9-7, 1-1 NCC)
tonight at Halenbeck Hall, 3-0. Scores were 30-22, 30-24
and 30-13.
The score remained close in the early going as the score
was knotted at 7-7 in game one. The Huskies opened up
a lead with a 5-0 spurt and finished it with
a 11-3 run to lead 22-13. After a Beaver time-out, the guests could not cut the
deficit under seven as SCSU took the game, 30-22.
In game two, after one of freshman
Lindsey Bromenshenkel’s career-high
six kills, St. Cloud State ran off six of seven to go up 8-5. From there, the
hosts slowly creeped out to a 22-15 edge, holding the Beavers to single points.
However, two kills by senior
Kristin Peterson capped a 7-2 run to bring BSU within
two at 23-25. But a Husky service ace ended game two as SCSU scored the last
four points.
“We lost momentum and just couldn’t get it back (trailing 23-25 in
game two),” said head coach
Kim Falkenhagen.
The Huskies raced out to an 11-3 lead in game three and never looked back. Bemidji
State strung together five of six at one point to trail 10-20. However, St. Cloud
State broke off nine of the last 10 points to hand the Beavers their fourth loss
in five matches to the Huskies.
Falkenhagen used several different rotations on the night, as she tried to find
some spark off the bench.
“I just wanted to see if I could get a couple players out there that could
change the momentum and get a couple points for us,” said Falkenhagen. “St.
Cloud State worked really hard. They went all out and were able to pick up points
on bad plays.”
Peterson paced the Beavers with nine kills while four others had at least four
knock-downs. The Hayfield, Minn., native narrowly missed her ninth double-double
of the year as she added 10 digs. Junior
Kristin Smith notched her fourth double-double
of the season, and first since a 33 assist-10 dig match against the University
of Mary (9/6/03), with 26 assists and 10 digs.
For the Huskies, three players tallied nine kills while Leah Herrboldt led the
way in digs (17) and Kari Turkowski had 32 assists, seven kills and seven digs.
BSU plays host to Northern State and MSU-Moorhead for Homecoming on Friday and
Saturday. Friday’s match begins at 7 p.m. with first serve at 6 p.m. on
Saturday.
