WINONA, Minn. - Winona State scored once
in each half to secure a 2-0 win over Bemidji State Sunday
afternoon at Maxwell Field. The Beavers have now lost four
consecutive matches and their first two Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference matches as well.
Winona State’s Holly Sutton tallied the only goal of
the opening half and what proved to be the game-winning goal
in the 21st minute.
The Warriors added an insurance goal in the 81st minute when
Kayla Walters made the score 2-0 to solidify the victory for
the home team.
Winona State outshot Bemidji State 24-5 on the afternoon.
Sophomore netminder
Kari Torgeson (New Hope,
Minn.) made 10 saves, while Kristin Nelson earned the shutout
after making two saves.
The loss drops BSU’s record to 7-7-0 overall and 0-2-0
in NSIC play. WSU now owns a 2-0-0 mark in the NSIC and an
overall record of 9-2-2. Bemidji State will look to get back
on the winning track with home matches against Southwest Minnesota
State Saturday, Oct. 16 and Wayne State (Neb.) Sunday, Oct.
17 at the BSU Soccer Complex. The Beavers challenge the Mustangs
at 1 p.m. on Saturday and face off against the Wildcats at
1 p.m. on Sunday. Wayne State is coached by former BSU assistant
coach Oliver Twelvetrees.
