BEMIDJI, Minn. - Six school records have been
broken by the Bemidji State indoor track and field squad through
the first four meets of the season. Freshman
Shelby McCrady
(Montgomery, Minn.) has two of these, setting marks in both
the 500-meter (1:18.37) and 600-meter (1:40.90) runs. “Shelby
has untapped resources,” head coach
Craig Hougen
said. “By the time her career is over, she could hold
four or five more records.”
Junior
Caesare Stimson (Chisago Lakes, Minn.) posted
a score of 3,098 at last weekend’s Bison Pentathlon,
bettering Melanie Hoheisel’s school record in the process.
Her performance leaves her ranked 2nd in the NSIC in that
event. Stimson leaped 5-5 1/4 in the high jump the next day
at the Bison Open, earning her provisional qualification for
the national championships. Automatic qualification is granted
to any jumper who clears 5-9 3/4. She holds a national rank
of 17th and a rank of third in the NSIC in the high jump,
and also is ranked No. 7 in the 55-meter hurdles.
After clearing the bar at 6-8 1/4, junior high jumper
Steve
Schreiber (Forest Lake, Minn.) currently holds the No.
1 ranking in the NSIC and the No. 17 rank in the nation. Schreiber,
now provisionally qualified, is attempting to become the first
male athlete from Bemidji State to qualify for the NCAA Division
II Indoor Track & Field Championships since Andy Eggerth
competed in the 400-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles in 2000.
He can earn automatic qualification to the Nationals by jumping
7-1, a feat only accomplished by two athletes so far this
season.
Sophomore
Christa Pribula (East Grand Forks, Minn.)
shattered the one-mile run record by almost eight seconds
with her run last weekend. Her blistering 5:22.73 mile garnered
her a No. 4 conference ranking to go along with her No. 7
ranking in the 1000-meter run. Sophomore
Sara Olson’s
(Fairmont, Minn.) 42-3 1/4 weight throw toss also broke a
school record.
McCrady, Stimson, freshman
Lindsey Gregg (Bemidji,
Minn.) and sophomore
Shauna McInerney (Rainy River,
Ontario) combined to set a school record in the 4x200 relay
at the Super 8 Open three weekends ago with a time of 1:46.86.
The women’s 4x400 relay team is currently ranked first
in the conference, riding a 4:09.13 pace also set at the Super
8.
Bemidji State will compete this weekend at the Cobber Invitational
in Moorhead, Minn. Hougen expects more of a team effort, with
athletes rep-resenting the squad in almost every event. “We’re
nursing a few injuries right now so we may not be at 100 percent,
but we should be just fine for the weekend after,” Hougen
said. He anticipates continued success at the conference meet,
slated for February 26-28 in Wayne, Neb.
