Bemidji State Falls 3-1 to Nebraska-Omaha to End Tournament Play

ABERDEEN, S.D. - In its final match of the North Central Regional Crossover Challenge, the Bemidji State volleyball team (3-4, 0-0 NSIC) fell 3-1 to Nebraska-Omaha (8-3, 0-0 NCC) Saturday afternoon. BSU finished the tournament 1-2, after beating Upper Iowa on Friday and dropping matches to #16 Augustana and Nebraska-Omaha today.

In the first game of the match Nebraska-Omaha edged Bemidji State 30-18, hitting at a .286 (17-5-42) clip, while BSU generated a lowly -.026 (8-9-39) hitting percentage. The Beavers seemingly turned the corner in game two, beating the Mavericks 30-22 and generating a .267 (14-6-30) to .075 (13-10-40) hitting percentage advantage.

UNO turned the tables on BSU in games three and four, however, recording 30-13 and 30-24 victories. The Mavericks ended the day with a .240 (60-24-150) hitting percentage, while the Beavers hit just .110 (45-29-145) overall.

Individually, senior Kelly Piper recorded her second double-double of the tournament, as she tallied 11 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Alicia Beaman played strong defensively for the Beavers, earning a team-high 17 digs in the match. Senior Heather Haugen finished as the squad’s best hitter with a .407 (12-1-27) hitting percentage, while also sharing the team-lead in kills with Brittney Burns at 12.

The Beavers open the home portion of their schedule with a contest against St. Cloud State on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at the BSU Gymnasium. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
