Beavers Ride Defense to 0-0 Tie with #21 WInona State

BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bemidji State defense had their hands full Saturday taking on Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference leading Winona State, who is ranked #21 in the nation. But, the Beavers and goaltender Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.) were up to the challenge holding the Warriors scoreless through two overtimes to preserve a 0-0 tie.

Torgerson was bombarded with 14 shots as the Winona State attack kept the pressure on the Bemidji State back line. Torgerson’s 14 saves included four in the overtime frames. The shutout was the third of the season for Torgerson and eighth on the year for the team. Jessica Meath has recorded one and the two have combined for four shutouts. The game also marked Torgerson’s second double overtime shutout of the season. The previous game came at St. Scholastica in a 0-0 tie on Sept. 1.

Until today’s tie, Winona State ,the defending conference champion, had won all 11 meetings between the two teams.

Torgerson’s season record moved to 8-2-5 on the season with her school record 12th career shutout. Warrior goalkeeper Kathryn Kramer stopped all five shots she faced.

Bemidji State remains firmly entrenched in second place in the NSIC with its only conference loss coming earlier this season to Winona State, who has yet to be beaten in conference.

BSU has just two regular season games left before the NSIC playoffs start on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The Beavers are back at home tomorrow against Concordia-St. Paul on Senior Day. The Beavers then travel next Saturday to Minnesota Crookston to take on the Golden Eagles. Bemidji State beat CSP 2-1 earlier this season in St. Paul and also beat UMC at home 3-0.
