Kelly Hyvare Lifts BSU to 2-1 Double-Overtime win to Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. -- It took over 100 minutes and two overtime periods, but the Bemidji State University soccer team solidified its eighth victory of the season today as Kelly Hyvare (Fr., Coon Rapids, Minn.) beat the Wayne State goalkeeper for the game-winner just 2:31 into the second overtime.

The Beavers managed just four shots all day with two of them going on net, but BSU took advantage of those opportunities finding the back of the next on each of its shots.

BSU was out shot in the game 23 to four with 14 of the WSC attempts going on goal. But the BSU goal keeper Kari Torgerson (Jr., New Hope, Minn.) came up big for her team making 13 saves including one in the first overtime to keep the Beavers' hopes alive.

Wayne State drew first blood when Anne-Marie Lind lofted a shot past the outstretched arms of Torgerson in the 35th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Jenna Pendly garnered an assist on the play.

The Wildcats would take the one-goal advantage into the halftime break as the the Beavers failed to generate any scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes of play.

Katie Meinhardt (Jr., Maple Grove, Minn.) lit the BSU half of the scoreboard, tying the game at 1-1 on on an unassisted goal, her sixth goal of the season, in the 69th minute.

Both teams would be held scoreless during the next 21 minutes of regulation and through the first 10 minutes of overtime, but after settling for a tie with Wayne State in their last meeting (Sept. 26), BSU came out in the second overtime with a tremendous sense of urgency.

Hyvare answered the call finding the back of the net with her team-leading seventh tally of 2005 to end the game, 2-1, just 2:31 into the second overtime period. The goal was unassisted.

The win brings Bemidji State to 8-3-3 on the season and 6-1-1 in NSIC play. The Beavers will be back in tomorrow as they travel to Marshall, Minn. to battle the Mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State in NSIC play. the game is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
