BSU's Second consecutive double OT Match ends in 1-1 tie

MARSHALL, Minn. - For the second consecutive day the Bemidji State University soccer team played in a double overtime game. After picking up the win yesterday, BSU settled for a 1-1 tie against host Southwest Minnesota State on a goal by freshman Lauren Olivares (El Paso, Texas.).

Southwest Minnesota State provided the only offense of the first half with a goal in the 37th minute by Joelle Dean. This goal would be the last for the Mustangs as goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Jr.; New Hope, Minn.) and the BSU defenders put up a wall. Torgerson would end up collecting seven saves in the 110 minutes of action.

After a 71-minute drought, the Beaver offensive charge came alive as yesterday’s hero Kelly Hyvare (Fr.; Coon Rapids, Minn.) made a nifty pass to set up Olivares for the strike to tie the game at 1-1.

The goal was the second of the season for the rookie Olivares, who now has five points. Hyvare, also the team scoring leader, tacked up her 18th point of the season with the assist.

The scoring subsided for each team through both overtimes, ending the match knotted at one apiece. Mustang goalie Kayla Borstad collected nine saves in the match.

The tie moved the BSU season record to 8-3-4 and 6-1-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play to remain second in the team standings behind defending champion Winona State.

The Beavers will return the Bemidji for their next four contests, starting with the first two this weekend against Northern State and Minnesota State-Moorhead. Each match is slated for 1:00 pm. This weekend also marks BSU soccer’s Parents’ Weekend event. Earlier this season the Beavers shutout both Northern State and MSU-Moorhead.
