BEMIDJI, Minn. - Freshman forward Jennifer Clifford (Ham Lake, Minn.) put a header in the back of the net off a perfectly placed corner kick from fellow freshman Danielle Egeberg (M, New Hope, Minn.) to give Bemidji State University a 1-0 non-conference victory over visiting Jamestown College.
The BSU defense stifled the Jimmie attack all afternoon and goalkeeper Kari Torgerson (Sr., New Hope, Minn.) was perfect in net. Torgerson made four saves, including a spectacular kick save on a point-blank shot from Jimmies forward Ashlyn White.
After a scramble in front of the net White corralled the ball and fired a shot from the front of the goal box, but Torgerson made a quick lunge with her left foot and deflected the ball wide to keep the game tied heading into halftime.
Just eight minutes into the second half the Beaver attack forced a corner kick with some aggressive offense. Egeberg lofted a high arching pass and Clifford was positioned to beat Jamestown goalie Ashley Veches for the second goal of her young career.
BSU then clamped down on defense the rest of the way allowing just one shot on goal in the second half. New to the defense this year, Tamara Price (Jr., Cloquet, Minn.) and Jessica Ploeger (Oak Grove, Minn.) combined forces with backline veterans Tegan Moehn (Sr., Ramsey, Minn.) and Tracy Ringgenberg (Sr., Baldwin, N.D.) to help Torgerson to her third shutout of the season.
The win improves the BSU record to 6-5 overall on the season heading into Monday afternoon’s contest agaisnt the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs.
UMD will battle the Beavers Monday at 4 p.m., on the BSU Soccer Field. The last time the two teams met, BSU took a 5-4 high-scoring affair on Sept. 2, 2004.
