defeated by Winona State University, 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-16),
Saturday afternoon in the team's second match of the Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference Challenge at Alex Nemzek Gymnasium
in Moorhead, Minn.
Brittney Burns (Jr., OH, LeSueur, Minn.)
paced a BSU attack that managed just 36 kills with 16 while
hitting a team-best .324 (16-4-37). Alaina Adams (Jr.,
OH, Halstad, Minn.) and Jennifer Janckila
(So., MB, Appleton, Wis.) each contributed seven kills of
their own to account for the bulk of the Beavers' offense.
Defensively, the BSU out-dug the Warriors led by a career-effort
from Laura Vonasek (Fr., DS/L, East Grand
Forks, Minn.). The newcomer managed a match-high 17 digs besting
her previous career mark of 16 set during last night's match
versus Upper Iowa University. On the block, Janckila was the
Beavers' most effective deterrent collecting a pair of block
assists.
Kiersten Arendt led the Warriors with 13 kills, four blocks
and hit .385 (13-3-26) in the match. Rudi Balich topped the
Warriors' dig list with 16 while setter Lisa Dobie collected
11 digs to combine with 40 assists for the only double-double
of the match.
The Warrior serve had BSU baffled all afternoon as five WSU
players each registered a pair of service aces for a total
of 10 on the day.
WSU closes the gap in the all-time series to 43-36 and is
now 12-10 all-time when facing the Beavers in a neutral setting.
WSU improves to 14-10 overall and evens its league record
to 6-6 with the win.
Bemidji State (7-16; 3-8 NSIC) will complete challenge play
by battling No. 7 Concordia University-St. Paul at 6 p.m.
Saturday evening. The match is set for Minnesota State University,
Moorhead's Alex Nemzek Gymnasium.
