GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Bemidji State University soccer team lifted the lid on its 2006 campaign with a 4-1 loss to the University of North Dakota today at Bronson Field in Grand Forks, N.D. BSU senior Katie Meinhardt (Maple Grove, Minn.) accounted for the Beavers' lone goal in the game.
The teams played the first 41 minutes even, but a pair of Fighting Sioux goals during the final four minutes of the first half would send the Beavers to the locker room down 2-0 at the half.
Shannon Murphy struck first sliding a goal past the BSU goalkeeper, Kari Torgerson (Sr., New Hope, Minn.), in the 42nd minute of play on a pass from Lara Traczyk. Kevyn Lindeman would give the Sioux a two-goal cushion with just 17 seconds left in the half when Traczyk and Janine Oxley combined to feed Lindeman on a corner kick.
The Beavers would come out of the break to cut the deficit in half during the 54th minute of play when Kelly Hyvare (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Danielle Uphoff (Fr., Brainerd, Minn.) found Meinhardt streaking for the Beavers' first goal of the season.
The assist stands as the first collegiate point collected by Uphoff.
North Dakota used a goal by Kassi Brown less than three minutes later (57th) to again take a two-goal lead and Lindeman would put the game out of reach for BSU in the 73rd minute scoring her second goal of the season on a pass from Cassie Lund.
Torgerson played 90 minutes in net for BSU making seven saves in the 4-1 loss.
The UND goalkeep. Lauren Sera was forced to make just one save while allowing Meinhardt's tally.
BSU, 0-1-0 on the season, will be back in action Sept. 1-3 when it participates in the College of St. Scholastica's Advantage Emblem Cup. The Beavers begin the event versus the University of Wisconsin-Stout on the 1st. Sept. 2 BSU is paired with Dakota Wesleyan and the Beavers will wrap up the event with a match versus Northland College Sept. 3.
Bemidji State is the defending champion of the event after playing St. Scholastica to a 0-0 double-overtime tie and downing Northland 6-0 last fall.
