Beavers fall on senior day to Winona State

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) [box] - The Bemidji State University volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match on senior day at the BSU Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The warriors spoiled senior day by sweeping the Beavers by scores of 19-30, 24-30, 22-30.

Winona State avenged a earlier loss to the Beavers on its home court on Sept. 21 of this year. The Warriors came out on a mission and returned the favor to the Beavers by sweeping BSU in three games. BSU swept the Warriors earlier this season in Winona, Minn.

Errors and hitting was the big difference between Winona State and Bemidji State this afternoon. Bemidji State hit at a rate of just over .100 at .119 (35k-21e-118at) and committed 45 errors in the match. Winona State hit just under .300 at .296 (49k-17e-108at) committing just 32 errors in the match.

Bemidji State was led by Nicole Olson (Fr., MB, Baudette, Minn.) and Heather Sampson (Fr., OH, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) as Olson led the Beavers for the ninth time this season with nine kills. Sampson was close behind Olson with eight kill respectively. Olson hit at a rate of .316 (9k-3e-19at) the eighth match this season that she has hit over .300.

Brittney Burns (Sr., OH, LeSueur, Minn.) led the Beavers defensively as she was the only Beaver with double-digit digs with 10. Allison Kunde (So., S, Burnsville, Minn.) also recorded nine digs in the match for the Beavers. Jennifer Janckila (Jr., MB, Appleton, Wis.) controlled the net for the Beavers as she recorded four blocks (0bs-4ba) in the match for the Beavers.

Alicia Beaman (Sr., S, St. Paul Park, Minn.) led the Beaver offensive charge for the twelfth time this season as she posted 17 set assists. Kunde (So., S, Burnsville, Minn.) chipped in with 11 assists on the evening for the Beavers.

The Warriors had a very balanced offensive attack as three players recorded double-digit kills in the match. Carmen Stankowski, Rudi Balich and Kim Nemcek each had 10 kills for Winona State University. Nemcek led the Warriors in hitting percentage as she hit .500 in the match (10k-1e-18at). Carmen Stankowski and Lisa Dobie each recorded double-doubles as Stankowsi added 12 digs to go with her 10 kills while Dobie had 36 assists and 10 digs on the afternoon.

The Beavers struggled with the serving of Winona State as the Warriors recorded 10 services aces in the match. Mollie Bjelland recorded 5 of the Warriors 10 aces. Every time the Beavers seemed to get a little momentum it seemed as if Bjelland was there to serve an ace to switch the tide.

With the loss the Beavers fall to 44-37 all-time versus Winona State. With the win the Warriors earn a season series split with the Beavers this season as the Beavers earned a win over Winona State on Sept. 21 in Winona, Minn.. Bemidji State is now 15-11 all-time versus the Beavers at the BSU Gymnasium. It is the first loss the Beavers have surrendered at home versus the Warriors since Sept. 24, 2005 when the Beavers lost in three games to Winona State.

Bemidji State (8-12; 4-10 NSIC) will wrap up the week of play tomorrow afternoon when the Beavers host the Upper Iowa University Peacocks at the BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers currently hold a four-match win streak over Upper Iowa. The first serve is set for 3:00 p.m.
