Beavers extend win streak to five versus Peacocks, 3-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) [box] - The Bemidji State University volleyball prevailed in four games, 3-1, over the Upper Iowa University Peacocks from the BSU Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Beavers earned the victory by scores of 30-26, 30-25, 26-30, and 30-25 to pick up its ninth win of the season, the most wins since 2004 when BSU garnered 10 wins.

With the win Bemidji State University extended its win streak over the Upper Iowa University Peacocks to five matches. The story of the match was errors, Upper Iowa University committed 62 errors while Bemidji State committed just 44. The Beavers out hit the Peacocks hitting at a pace of .153 (53k-26e-177at) while Upper Iowa hit at a rate of .132 (62k-37e-190at).

Bemidji State was led by three players who recorded double-digit kills. Heather Sampson (Fr., OH, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Brittney Burns (Sr., OH, LeSueur, Minn.) each recorded 15 kills in the match while Brie Groskreutz (So., OH, Reedsburg, Wis.) chipped in with 10 kills. Burns hit at a rate of .324 (15k-4e-34at) while Sampson hit .209 (15k-6e-43at) to lead the Beavers in hitting percentage. Burns had recorded 1220 kills in her career, she is just six kills shy from taking over third on the all-time kills list at BSU.

Groskreutz led the Beavers defensively as she recorded 24 digs in the match. Groskreutz moved into the 10th spot for digs in a season with 392 digs this season. Alicia Beaman (Sr., S, St. Paul Park, Minn.), Laura Vonasek (So, LB, East Grand Forks, Minn.) and Allison Kunde (So., S, Burnsville, Minn.) also had double-digit dig totals. Beaman notched 14 digs, Vonasek had 12 and Kunde added 11 digs in the match. Jennifer Janckila (Jr., MB, Appleton, Wis.) tied a season-high with five blocks (0bs-5ba) and Burns set a season-high with four aces in the match.

Beaman led the Beaver offensive charge for the thirteenth time this season as she posted 33 set assists. Beaman moves into fifth on all-time assits list at BSU with 2370. Kunde chipped in with 15 assists on the afternoon for the Beavers. Beaman, Kunde and Groskreutz each recorded double-doubles in the match for the Beavers. Beaman and Groskreutz each record their eighth double-double of the season while Kunde recorded her second double-double of the season.

The Peacocks had four players with double-digit kills. Keely Jones led the way with 15 kills hitting at a rate of .231 (15k-6e-39at). Darcy Hageman added with 13 kills, while Beth Deutmeyer had 11 kills and Shea Meyermann netted 10 kills in the match. Shea Meyermann, Darcy Hageman, and Keely Jones each had double-double performances for the Peacocks. Meyermann added 19 digs to her 10 kills, Hageman had 18 digs and Jones had 14 digs in the match. Tatiana Jackson paced the Peacock offense with 36 assists while Beth Deutmeyer controlled the net with four blocks (0bs-4ba).

The Beavers set a new season-high in aces with 12 total aces in the match versus the Peacocks. Six different Beavers recorded at least one ace in the match.

The Peacocks fall to 4-22 on the season and 0-14 in the NSIC with the loss today versus the Beavers. The Beavers improve to 7-1 all-time versus the Peacocks with the win and are 2-0 all-time at the BSU Gymnasium. Both games versus the Peacocks at the BSU Gymnasium have been four game wins for the Beavers.

Bemidji State improves to 9-12 on the season and 5-10 in the NSIC. The nine wins for the Beavers is the most since 2004 when the Beavers garnered 10 wins and the five conference wins is the most since 2003 when the Beavers had seven conference wins.

Bemidji State (9-12; 5-10 NSIC) will play its third ranked team this season as the Beavers will travel to Duluth, Minn. to take on No. 3 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs on Tuesday, Oct. 23. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
