BISMARCK, N.D. (Community Bowl) - James Moore
(So., RB, Houston, Texas) posted Bemidji State University's second
100-yard rushing game the year and the Beavers racked up 250 yards of
total offense but managed just seven points Saturday in Bismarck, N.D.
and for the second consecutive season, the University of Mary (N.D.)
handed the Beavers a loss, 10-7.
The loss
snapped BSU's school-record wining streak versus Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference competition at 11 games--a streak dating
back to the first game of the 2006 campaign.
The
things that the Beavers have counted on for success to this point of
the season, seemed to escape them Saturday. They failed to record a
sack after piling up a league-leading 20 during the first five games;
the defense, ranked third in the NCAA after giving up just 47.8 rushing
yards per game this season, allowed U-Mary over three times that (155)
and an offensive unit that routinely ventures beyond its opponents
20-yard line and scores on nearly 83-percet of those trips was a meager
1-of-2 in the red zone today.
A true defensive battle, it took Bemidji State four possessions and 14:24 to find the end zone.
After a 75-yard punt by Paul Potemra
(Fr., K/P, Poolesville, Md.) buried the Marauders deep in their own
territory, the Beavers buckled down on defense and forced UM to punt
the ball right back, setting the offense up with just 67 yards to the
end zone.
Using a 40-yard scamper by Moore and a 20-yard pass from Wardrope to Erick Newman
(Jr., RB, ), it took BSU just 67 seconds and four plays to march down
the field and light their side of the scoreboard. Ultimately, Cory
Wardrope (So., QB, Anchorage, Alaska) hit freshman Andrew Schultz from
four-yards out for Schultz's first career TD reception and the Beavers'
only score of the day.
Mary responded midway through the second quarter, driving 80 yards on 11 plays.
Blair
Sandy was 4-of-5 for 46 yards and capped the drive with a 25-yard
touchdown strike to Roman Penirian to even the score at (7-7) with 4:52
to go in the first half.
A quick three-and-out
by BSU would give the Marauders the ball with 3:19 to go in the half
and despite U-Mary mounting another sustained drive, the Beavers dodged
a bullet forcing a fumble as the halftime horn sounded with the
Marauders on the doorstep.
The teams would go into the halftime break with the score locked a 7-7.
The
Marauders took a 10-7 lead on their third possession of the second half
marching 41 yards to set up a Rett Thibodeaux 26-yard field goal with
2:06 left in the third quarter.
That was all U-Mary would need as each team was held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
BSU would put together its best opportunity to score late in the third quarter. Wardrope connected with Anthony Schreiber
(Sr., WR, Berkeley, Ill.) for 35 yards to move the Beavers deep into UM
territory but BSU would fumble on the 15-yard line and the Marauders
recovered the loose ball to end the scoring threat.
Wardrope
completed 7-of-16 pass attempts for 71 yards and a touchdown. He also
added to Moore's game-high 117 yards on the ground gaining 34 of his
own. Schreiber led the BSU receiving corps with three catches for 48
yards.
With the BSU offense struggling, punter
Potemra was a busy man. He booted the ball a career-high eight times
for an average of 42.5 yards per punt and landed five inside the
Marauders 20-yard line.
Andrew Eagan
(Fr., LB, Sauk Village, Ill.) paced the Beavers defensively. He
registered a game-high 11 tackles (seven solo) and posted a tackle for
loss. Jeremiah Johnson (Sr., S, Glidden, Iowa) added eight tackles (four solo) with Josh Rose (Sr., DB, Stillawater, Minn.), Robert Molstad (Sr., DE, Champlin, Minn.) and Zach Christ (Sr., LB, Buffalo, Minn.) each contributing seven.
Sandy
paced the Marauder offense. He was 19-of-32 for 170 yard s and a
touchdown. Erik Kruse caught six passes for 66 yards while Jamal Lomax
led UM on the ground running for 79 yards.
The
Beavers, who are 4-2 overall and 3-1 in NSIC play, return to Chet
Anderson Field next week (Oct. 13) to face Wayne Sate College in the
annual Lions' game. Kickoff for the league match up is slated for 1 p.m.
