NIAGARA, N.Y. - Erin Cody (Fr., Roseville, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal Saturday afternoon to help give the Bemidji State women’s hockey team a 2-1 loss to Niagara University in Niagara, N.Y.

Venla Heikkila got the Purple Eagles on the board first, scoring an unassisted goal at the 17:36 mark of the first period. Mary McKinnon scored the eventual game-winner on an NU power play with 45 seconds remaining in the second period. Her goal was assisted by Heikkila and Chris Jablonski.

It took just 1:43 into the third period for Cody to score her first career goal, but the Beavers were unable to tie the game, falling to 0-8-2 on the season, while the Purple Eagles improved to 4-2-2.

Lexy Parenteau (Fr., Franconia, Minn.) and Eva Schwaerzler (Fr., Dornbirn, Austria) assisted on Cody’s goal. BSU tied with NU on faceoffs 28-28, and held the Purple Eagles to just 23 shots on goal, while attempting 21. Bemidji State was 0-for-5 on the power play and Niagara was 1-of-8. This marks the third-consecutive game that BSU has given up a power-play goal.

Emily Brookshaw (Sr., Webster, Wisc.) played all but 47 seconds in net for the Beavers, saving 21 shots. Jill Zelonis got the win in net for Niagara, saving 20 shots.

Cody and Schwaerzler are tied for the team lead in points this season with three. Cody is currently tied for the team lead in assists with two and Schwaerzler is tied for the team lead in goals with two.

Bemidji State has gone winless in its last 15 games dating back to a 2-0 victory over Minnesota Feb. 9, 2007. This is the longest winless drought in school history.
