Beavers bury St. Cloud State, 3-1

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. (Hallenbeck Hall) [box] - The Bemidji State University volleyball team snapped a season long three-game losing streak tonight as the Beavers defeated the St. Cloud State University Huskies in four games (30-25, 26-30, 30-24, 30-16). In arguably their best performance of the young season the Beavers saw three players record double-doubles and two players record career-highs in digs.

Tonight the trend continued in that the winner of the first game of the match would go on to win the match. In all seven of the Beavers matches this season the winner of the first game has went on to win the match. Tonight the Beavers were able to garner a game 1 win and cruise to the victory to stop a three-game skid. BSU lost the second game of the match but went on to control the final two games to secure the win.

Brittney Burns (Jr., OH, LeSueur, Minn.) and Brie Groskreutz (So., OH, Reedsburg, Wis.) led the Beavers as they both recorded double-doubles for the Beavers. Burns led all Beavers posting a season-high 20 kills and recording a career-high in digs with 30. Groskreutz posted 13 kills for the Beavers and set a career-high in digs for the second time in three matches garnering 33 digs on the evening. Groskreutz is the only player in BSU history to record 30 or more digs in three consecutive matches. The double-double was the fourth straight double-double performance for Burns, which gives her 29 double-doubles in her career, it was Groskreutz’s second double-double of the season and the sixth of her career.

Nicole Olson (Fr., MB, Baudette, Minn.) chipped in on the offensive end with 16 kills for her seventh consecutive match with double-digit kills. Olson also picked up four blocks and seven digs in the victory.

Once again the Beaver defense was a force as the Beavers recorded 117 digs on the evening, 17 more digs than the Huskies. Along with Burns and Groskreutz, Alicia Beaman (Sr. S, St. Paul Park, Minn.) and Chelsea Geisler (Grand Rapids, Minn.) reached double figures in kills. Geisler accumulated 19 digs while Beaman accounted for 17 of the 117 digs on the night for the Beaver. Beaman joined Burns and Groskreutz in the double-double category as she posted 27 assists to go with her 17 digs. This was the second straight double-double performance for Beaman and her second of the season. Beaman has 32 career double-doubles.

For the second straight match Anna Leafblad (So., MB, Blaine, Minn.) led the Beavers in blocks with five (2bs, 3ba). The Beavers posted 12 blocks in the match while the Huskies notched six blocks on the evening.

Allison Kunde (So., S, Burnsville, Minn.) also had 27 assists in the match while collecting seven digs and leading the team in services aces with three.

This is the first victory for the Beavers over the Huskies since Oct. 25, 2005 when the Beavers beat the Huskies in an exciting five-game match. This is just the third time the Beavers have beat the Huskies on their home court in the series history. The last time the Beavers beat St. Cloud State at home was on Oct. 15, 1980 when the Beavers beat St. Cloud State in five games.

St. Cloud State University was led by Emily Baldwin and Jennifer Waterman who both recorded double-doubles on the evening. Baldwin recorded 17 kills and 13 digs, with Waterman picking up 45 assists and 12 digs. Andreana Pieper led the Huskies on the defensive end with 30 digs in the loss.

With the loss the Huskies drop to 5-7 overall this season.

BSU, 3-4 overall and 0-2 in NSIC play, will next be in action on Friday, Sept. 14 when the Beavers host No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul from the BSU Gymnasium for its 2007 home opener at 7:00 p.m.
