MARSHALL, Minn. -
Ashlee Ellefsen (Fr., Hugo, Minn.) made sure the Bemidji State soccer team wasn’t going to lose.
The leading scorer for the Beavers scored the equalizer off a rebound by Jamie Ford
(So, Edina, Minn.) in the 58th minute against Southwest Minnesota State
University Sunday to help her team play to a 1-1 double overtime draw
and keep the Beavers undefeated in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference.
Tatum Borstad scored her first
career goal for SMSU in the second minute of the game off a free kick
into the top right corner of the net. Ellefsen answered with her goal
in the second half and the two teams were unable to score a game-winner.
BSU
(5-5-2, 1-0-1 NSIC) outshot the Mustangs in 9-6 in the first half, 11-6
in the second, 4-1 in the first overtime and 2-0 in the second
overtime. The Beavers attempted 26 shots to Southwest Minnesota
State’s 13.
Samantha Ross
(Fr., Stillwater, Minn.) started her first collegiate game in goal, and
performed well in her starting debut. She allowed just the one goal
early in the contest, but settled down to play all 110 minutes while
making five saves, including one in the first overtime period.
Kayla Borstad made 12 saves, gave up one goal and played the entire game in net for SMSU (2-7-2, 1-0-1 NSIC).
Bemidji
State moves to 2-9-2 all-time against the Mustangs. The Beavers are
2-0-2 in the last four meetings, and haven’t lost to SMSU since a
4-3 home defeat on Oct. 16, 2004.
The tie was the second of the season for BSU, and the first since a 1-1 draw Aug. 26 against Augustana.
The
1-0-1 conference start is the best ever for Bemidji State. The Beavers
are tied with Northern State, Upper Iowa and SMSU for the second-best
record in the conference after the first weekend of NSIC action.
Minnesota State-Moorhead leads the way with its 1-0-0 record.
Bemidji
State returns to action Oct. 6 for a home contest with Concordia-St.
Paul. It’s Parents’ Weekend for the soccer team, and Oct. 7
the Beavers will play host to Minnesota State-Moorhead on Senior Day.
