COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Bemidji State University
women’s hockey team was shut out 3-0 by Ohio State University
Friday night at OSU Ice Rink. This was just the third time in school
history that the Buckeyes were able to blank the Beavers.
BSU
moves to 1-4-2 on the season and 0-3 in Western Collegiate Hockey
Association play. Ohio State ended its four-game losing skid, moving to
3-4 overall and 1-4 in the conference. The Beavers are now the only
team left without a victory in conference play.
All
three goals for Ohio State came in the second period. Natalie Spooner,
the Buckeye’s leading scorer, scored goals 3:18 and 15:41 into
the second off assists from Laura McIntosh, Raelyn LaRocque and Liana
Bonanno.
Melissa Feste added a power-play
marker 18:34 into the period off assists from Kim Theut and Teal
Bishop, and that was all the Buckeyes needed to hold off the BSU
attack.
Bemidji State was able to fire 24 shots despite not being able to find the back of the net. Erin Cody
(So., Roseville, Minn.) led the team in that category, as she took six
shots. Ohio State was held to just three shots in the first period, but
took 13 second-period shots and eight in the final frame for a tying
total of 24 shots.
The Beavers were also
given six chances to score with a man-advantage, and even took six
shots on the power play, but were never able to convert when given the
opportunity. Ohio State went 1-for-4 on its power-play chances.
Ohio
State was just one of two WCHA teams (Minnesota State University,
Mankato) that were unable to shut out Bemidji State last season. The
last time OSU shut out Bemidji State was Nov. 22, 2003.
BSU goaltender Zuzana Tomcikova
(Fr., Bratislava, Slovakia) got the starting nod and responded with 21
saves and three goals allowed in 59:52 of action. She moves to 1-2-1 on
the season.
Bemidji State moves to 11-23-5
all-time against Ohio State, and are now 0-3 in WCHA action for the
first time since the 2005-06 season.
The two teams will wrap up the series with a Saturday tilt beginning at 1:07 p.m. (ET).
