Kadlec grabs BSU single-season TD record; Bemidji State downs U-Mary, 31-10

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) - Needing just one touchdown reception to eclipse the single-season record at Bemidji State University, senior wide receiver George Kadlec (Chicago, Ill.) rose to the occasion today hauling a pair of TDs on three catches, while propelling the Beavers to a 31-10 win over NSIC North foe University of Mary for the first time ever.

The record-breaking catch came just 5:33 into the game as quarterback Derek Edholm (So., Anoka, Minn.) found Kadlec open for an 85-yard catch-and-run to put the Beavers up 14-0. The senior receiver tacked another score onto his own record just minutes into the fourth quarter from 29 yards out despite the blanketing defense of a Marauder defender.

Kadlec finished the day with three catches for 156 yards and the two touchdowns. The 156 yards stands as his second 100-yard receiving day of the season, the third of his career and ranks 12th on BSU single-game receiving yardage list. Kadlec has now recorded at least a touchdown in nine of BSU's 10 contests this season, including the last six consecutive games.

Just like Kadlec, it didn't take the Beavers to get things going today. Brandon Miles (So., RB, Kenai, Alaska) got the Beavers on the board just 3:03 into the game capping a seven-play, 65-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown plunge, his fourth of the season.

The Beavers go the ball back 1:46 later after BSU Gang Green defense forced the Marauders into a quick three-and-out. On second down and 15 yards to go from the Beavers' own 15-yard line, Edholm connected with Kadlec for the historic 85 touchdown reception.

A missed 44-yard field goal attempt by U-Mary's Rett Thibodeaux gave the Bemidji State the ball on its own 27-yard line with 13:22 to go in the first half. Edholm engineered a 12-play, 73-yard drive to stretch the Beavers' lead to 21-0. On the drive, the sophomore signal caller completed 6-of-6 through the air for 59 yards, including a five-yard connection with Andrew Schultz (So., WR, Grand Forks, N.D.) to a touchdown.

The Marauders reeled BSU to within 18 points, 21-3, sneaking in a Thibodeaux 35-yard field goal as the first half came to an end.

Bemidji State got a 21-yard field goal off the foot of Paul Potemra (So., K/P, Poolesville, Md.) to extend BSU's lead to 24-3 with 6:35 left in the third, but that was all the scoring wither team could muster in the quarter. But with the Beavers in the midst of an eight-play, 41-yard drive at the conclusion of the stanza, BSU would score on the 29-yard pass from Edholm to Kadlec just 46-seconds into the fourth.

U-Mary responded with a scoring drive of the our just one minute later. Backup quarterback Henry Lou found a streaking Roman Penirian for a 31-yard touchdown strike brining the score to its final resting sport at 31-10.

On the day, each team rolled up 401 yards of total offense. The Beavers were led by Edholm who was 15-of-26 for 256 yards and three touchdowns. In addition to Kadlec and Schultz, Jody Henningson (Fr., WR, Elburn, Ill.) led all receivers with four catches. On the ground, BSU managed 145 yards with Eurise Watson (Jr., RB, Dayton, Ohio) leading the way with 42 yards on five carries.

The win over the Marauders was the first in three tries for BSU. It also guarantees that the Beavers will post a winning record on their home field for the seventh consecutive season.

The Beavers (4-6; 3-6 NSIC) are back in action next weekend as they wrap up the 2008 regular-season versus Concordia University-St. Paul (4-6; 3-6 NSIC) in a 1 p.m. NSIC match up at Chet Anderson Field.
