The Bemidji State University women’s basketball team fell
short in their second-half comeback bid as Minnesota State University
Moorhead’s early shooting clinic was enough to down the Beavers 84-74 at Alex
Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn. The loss extends BSU’s losing streak to 10
and their road losing streak to 14 games. BSU falls to 5-17 (2-16 NSIC). MSU
Moorhead improves to 12-10 (9-9 NSIC).
The Beavers cut the Dragons lead down to six with 8:03 left
using a 10-3 run led by three pointers from Anna Hebrink (Sr., G, Austin, Minn.) and Morgan Lee (Fr., G,
Hayward, Wis.). The Dragons were able to take back control of the game
extending the lead back out to 14 with 3:49 left in the game following six
consecutive points from Angie Jetvig and MSU Moorhead would not look back.
The Dragons were led by the NSIC’s leading scorer Jetvig
with 28 points on nine of 14 shooting and 12 rebounds. Betsy Dickson added 16 points including
12 points from beyond the arc. MSU Moorhead ended the night shooting 25 of 51
from the floor for 49 percent. The Dragons connected on 11 of 22 from three
point land for 50 percent. They were 23 of 29 from the charity stripe.
Four players paced the Beavers with double-figure scoring.
Freshmen Lee and Ellie Wessling (Fr.,
G/F, Winsted, Minn.) with 14 points. Melissa Borstner (Fr., G, East Bethel, Minn.) and Colleen McKay
(Sr., C, Barnum, Minn.) added 12 points apiece. The Beavers were 29 of 68 from
the field for 42.6 percent. They connected on 10 of 22 threes led by Hebrink’s
nine points from beyond the arc. The Beavers only had 10 turnovers.
The MSU Moorhead Dragons started out on fire from
three-point land in the first half to get out to a 46-34 lead over BSU at the
break. The Dragons drained eight of 15 shots from beyond the arc in the opening
period for 53.3 percent. MSU Moorhead got out to a quick 10-2 lead in Saturday
night’s contest led by Bemidji-product Brittany Mayclin, who tallied eight of
the first 10 for MSU Moorhead.
The Beavers ended the opening period on a 9-1 run cutting
what was a 20 point lead down to a Dragon 12 point lead. The run started with a
put-back of her own missed layup by redshirt freshman Tiffany Van Haaften (G, Chaska, Minn.), who has been gaining more
playing time of late after joining the team following soccer season. After a
MSU Moorhead miss on the other end, Melissa Borstner took the ball the full
length of the court for a layup. Lee and McKay extended the run further with
two converted three pointers.
Lee led the Beavers with nine points on two of five shooting
from the floor. She was also four of four from the charity stripe. Borstner
added seven for BSU while McKay had five in the opening period. The Beavers
shot 13 of 36 from the field for 36.1 percent. They were out-rebounded 18-12 by
MSU Moorhead. BSU had only five turnovers in the opening period.
The Dragons were led by Jetvig’s 12 points on three of six
shooting from the field. Mayclin added eight. Three players had two threes for
MSU Moorhead including Mayclin.
The Beavers will return home to wrap up their home
conference slate against Minnesota State University and Southwest Minnesota
State University.
