Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Mariucci Arena) -- Top-ranked University of Minnesota netted a pair of power-play goals (2-for-6) and added a short-handed goal en route to a 5-2 nonconference victory over Bemidji State University Friday at Mariucci Arena.
Travis Boyd led the Gophers with two goals, while Taylor Cammarata posted a goal and two assists and goaltender Adam Wilcox turned aside 29 BSU shots to gain the win.
The Gophers struck first when Cammarata scored his first of the season at the 8:41 mark of the first period. Despite trailing 13-8 in shots on goal during the first 20 minutes, BSU opened the second period trailing by just one goal, 1-0.
Minnesota would stretch its lead to 2-0 35 seconds into the second frame and BSU would get an answer from Mitch Cain 52 seconds later to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Boy would net a short-handed goal (4:40) and power-play goal (8:38) to supply the Gophers with a 4-1 leads heading into the final 20 minutes of play.
Hudson Fasching found the back of the net for UM midway through the third, but Cory Ward would score his first goal of the season with 5:32 left in the game to bring the score to its final resting place, 5-2.
Freshman goalie Michael Bitzer posted 27 in the loss. He falls to 1-1-0 on the season.
The Beavers (1-2-0) and Golden Gophers (3-0-0) will wrap up the series tomorrow. The opening faceoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Mariucci Arena.
