Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men's hockey team snapped a seven-game losing skid Saturday with a 4-1 victory over St. Cloud State University. Andrew Walsh made 34 saves for the Beavers. Ruslan Pedan, Gerry Fitzgerald, Charlie O'Connor and Phil Brewer netted BSU's goals, while Kyle Bauman and Nate Arentz and Sam Rendle each notched two assists.
Down 1-0 after 20 minutes of play, the Beavers bounced back to tie the game at the 3:11 mark of the second period when Ruslan Pedan fired a laser through traffic. Kyle Bauman and Nate Arentz assisted on the sophomore blueliner's first goal of the season.
The score remained tied 1-1 until the 8:13 mark of the third when BSU's Fitzgerald triplets struck. Gerry finished the scoring play with his second goal of the weekend, while brothers Myles and Leo each posted assists on the play.
Thirty-seven seconds later, Charlie O'Connor tipped a Sam Rendle shot past the SCSU goaltender, Rasmus Reijola, to give the Beavers their first two-goal lead of the series, and it was all down hill from there.
After two near-misses on a empty net, BSU got a goal off the stick of captain Philp Brewer to settle the score at 4-1 and salvage a series split.
Walsh made a season-high 34 saves and surrendered just one goal in the win, while backstopping a BSU penalty-kill unit that stymied all four of the Huskies' power-play opportunities, including three in the second period alone. The senior improves to 2-5-0 on the season.
With the victory the Beavers improve to 4-10-0 overall. BSU returns to Western Collegiate Hockey Association play Dec. 5-6 when it travels to the Land of the Midnight Sun for a two-game set at University of Alaska Anchorage. Opening face Friday is set for 10:07 p.m. CST, while Saturday the teams will go head-to-head at 8:07 p.m. CST.
