Szurek propels BSU soccer to 6-2 win over SW Minnesota State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Christine Szurek scored a goal and matched a program record contributing three assists Saturday as the Bemidji State University soccer team defeated Southwest Minnesota State University, 5-2, in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play at Chet Anderson Stadium.

The Mustangs took a lead in the seocnd minute, netting the first goal of the match out of a scrum in front of the goal following a corner kick. But the Beavers would come charging back posting three goals in 4:53 seconds to take a 3-1 advantage into halftime.

Szurek set up goals from Bayley Ertl (5’), Rachael Norton (9’) and Sarah Stram (10’).

Szurek’s goal in came in the 56th minute of action to increase BSU’s lead to 4-1 before Katelyn Toner scored for SMSU to bring the score 4-2. Ertl would score her second goal of the match in the 67th minute of play and Melanie Simonson capped BSU’s scoring at 6-2 in the 87th minute.

Catherine Arneson was in net for the Beavers and made one save in her third victory of the season.

The Beavers, now 7-4-0 overall and 4-4-0 NSIC, will return to action Sunday for a 1 p.m. NSIC match up with University of Sioux Falls.
