BSU rides third-period surge to 4-1 victory at Alabama-Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Von Braun Center) – The Bemidji State University men’s hockey team scored three times during the final 7:05 of the third period and goaltender Reid Mimmack turned aside 16-of-17 shots to propel Beavers to a 4-1 victory at University of Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday.

Locked in a 1-1 tie for 24:35, BSU sophomore Gerry Fitzgerald netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season at the 12:55 mark of the third period to open the scoring barrage as Graeme McCormack and Nate Arentz added tallies in the final minute of the game.

Arentz and Parker each added a goal and an assist in the game to lead the Beavers offensively.

It took the Chargers just 1:36 to jump out to a 1-0 lead. Brandon Carlson took a pass from Adam Wilcox and beat the BSU goaltender, Reid Mimmack, for his third goal of the season.

Despite out shooting UAH 6-5 in the first, BSU opened the second period trailing the Chargers 1-0.

At the 7:20 mark of the second, Parker evened the score with his second goal of the season. Linemates, Arentz and Markus Gerbrandt were credited with assists on the play. The helper extended Gerbrandt’s current point streak to five games (2g-4a).

Tied deep into the final frame, Fitzgerald’s goal gave BSU its fist lead of the game and forced the Chargers to pull their goaltender during the final moments, opening the goal for McCormack’s empty-netter to seal with win, 3-1, with 47 seconds to go.

Arentz would add his second goal of the season with eight seconds left to bring the score to 4-1. Parker also collected his second point of the night on the scoring play.

Special teams were a non-factor in the game as BSU was 0-for-2 on the power-play and its penalty-kill unit held the Chargers without a goal on three man advantage opportunities.

Mimmack, who was making his third start of the season, is unbeaten in all three starts, moving to 2-0-1 in 2015-16.

Bemidji State (3-6-3; 2-5-2 WCHA) and Alabama-Huntsville (3-7-1; 2-6-1 WCHA) will wrap up the series at 7:07 p.m. Friday. The series finale will take place at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala.
