Mowat stops 39 shots but No. 10/9 Beavers fall to No. 4 Bulldogs, 2-1

Box Score

DULUTH, Minn. – Bemidji State University women’s hockey goaltender Brittni Mowat made 39-of-41 saves but the No. 10/9 Beavers (4-3-0, 2-3-0 WCHA) fell to No. 4 University of Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, Friday night.

Senior Madison Hutchinson scored the lone goal for the Beavers, her third of the season, while sophomore Sylvia Marolt tallied her first collegiate point with an assist.

Bemidji State would rely upon its senior goaltender early as the Beavers would be outshot in the first period, 17-9. However, Mowat and the Beavers’ defense were flawless in the period and BSU and UMD entered the first intermission in scoreless tie.

Minnesota Duluth would continue the attack in the second period and just 1:13 into the period, UMD’s Katerina Mrazova broke the tie with her second goal of the season. However, the Beavers would respond after the goal with more energy and eight minutes later Hutchinson evened the score at one. Both teams would fail to add another goal before the period end and entering the final period, the Bulldogs held a 31-15 shot advantage.

Minnesota Duluth would once again get a quick start to the period and at 4:08 of the third, Mrazova tallied her second goal of the game to put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-1. The Bulldogs’ defense and sophomore goaltender Maddie Rooney was strong for the much of the remaining period and with less than two minutes left, BSU pulled Mowat in favor of the extra attacker. The Beavers had their chances including a shot by Alexis Joyce that hit the post but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Bulldogs earn three points in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings and improve their conference record to 3-2-0 (4-2-1 overall). Rooney improves to 4-2-1 on the season while Mowat falls to 3-3-0.

Bemidji State will look to even the series tomorrow and will face-off at 4:07 p.m.
