Beavers come up empty at No. 2 Clarkson

Box Score

POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Bemidji State University women's hockey team fell to No. 2 Clarkson University, 2-0, Friday afternoon in Potsdam, N.Y., for the team's first loss of the season. The Beavers (1-1-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) were backed by senior goaltender Erin Deters who stopped 30-of-32 shots by the defending national champion Golden Knights (2-0-1, 0-0-0 ECAC).

The Beavers held the Golden Knights scoreless through the game's first two periods but goals in the second and 11th minutes of the third gave BSU its first loss of the season.

“We gave ourselves a chance going into the third period tied at 0,” said head coach Jim Scanlan. “They just made more plays than we did in the third period. I thought they did a nice job defensively limiting us to 15 shots so we just need to come in tomorrow and work a little bit harder offensively."

The Golden Knights out-shot the Beavers 32-15 but Deters was able to hold CU scoreless through the first two periods. Clarkson was able to put one past Deters and the Beavers’ defense early in the third period when Avery Mitchell scored 2:33 into the period. The Golden Knights then extended their lead nine minutes later when Elizabeth Giguere made it 2-0 at 11:54.

The Beavers pulled Deters with 27 seconds remaining looking to score but were unsuccessful and fell 2-0 in the first game of the series.

Bemidji State will look to even the series with Clarkson tomorrow when they face-off at 2 p.m. CST at Cheel Arena.
