Beavers drop NSIC Semifinal match to Augustana, 1-0

Box Score

MANKATO, Minn. (The Pitch) -- Augustana University needed just 27 seconds to light its side of the scoreboard and that was all they would need as the Vikings eliminated No. 14 Bemidji State University from the 2017 NSIC Tournament with a 1-0 semifinal victory in Mankato, Minn.

The loss marks the first the Beavers have suffered since they were eliminated from the 2016 NSIC Tournament semifinal by Minnesota State University, Mankato, 3-0, Nov. 4, 2016.

Augustana virtually started with a one-goal lead. It took the Vikings just 27 seconds to find the back of the net. Reiley Klose took a crossing pass from Sam Tymkowicz and beat the BSU goalkeeper Catherine Arneson. It was her third goal of the season.

The Vikings controlled play for the bulk of the first half, earning a 10-3 edge in total shots with a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal and took a 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

BSU fought back in the second half. In the game’s last moments, the Beavers assembled some of their best opportunities of the afternoon. Melanie Simonson was just high on a shot form distance and with less than a minute to go Allyson Smith fired a shot just high, but that was as close as the Beavers would come.

Arneson finished the match with eight saves and one goal allowed. Her record moves to 8-1-2.

Bemidji State (15-1-3) will now await its NCAA postseason fate. The No. 4 seed in the most recent NCAA Central Region Poll, still has an opportunity to receive a bid into the six-team NCAA Central Regional Tournament. The NCAA Tournament selection show will take place at 5 p.m. Nov. 6 on NCAA.com.
