Jones posts career day as Beaver Football falls to Dragons, 31-26

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) -- Senior wide receiver Landon Jones tallied career highs with eight receptions and three touchdowns Saturday afternoon in a comeback effort by the Bemidji State University football team. BSU fell in the “Battle for the Axe” to Minnesota State University Moorhead, 31-26, after recovering a late onside kick and a chance for a game-winning drive.

The Beavers rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the second half three second half touchdowns, including two of Jones’s three receiving scores. Freshman quarterback Alec Ogden connected with Jones on passes of 16, 11 and 6 yards for three touchdowns before finding senior wide receiver Jameson White on a 15-yard score with 2:12 left in the game.

On the ensuing kickoff, senior linebacker Andre Chisley Jr., recovered the onside kick to give BSU a chance for a game-winning drive. The next play, a MSUM defender penetrated into the backfield and caused a fumble that was recovered by the Dragons to seal the game.

Jones finished with eight receptions and three receiving touchdowns, both career highs, while totaling 146 receiving yards. Ogden threw for 292 yards on 21-of-37 passing with four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver Mannie Kugmeh led the team with a career-high nine catches for 90 yards. Kugmeh also added 63 yards on three kick returns.

Sophomore linebacker Gabe Ames led both teams with 14 games with 2.5 tackles for a loss. The “Gang Green” defense finished with 12 tackles for a loss of 60 yards, including three sacks for a loss of 24 yards.

Bemidji State concludes the 2018 season Saturday, Nov. 10 as Minot State University enters Chet Anderson Stadium.
