DULUTH, Minn. (James S. Malosky Stadium) -- Extra time was needed Saturday night as the Bemidji State University program fell in double overtime against No. 11 University of Minnesota Duluth at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn. The Beavers scored 19 second-half points to force overtime led by wide receivers Jacob Anderson and Landon Jones with touchdown receptions.

Both defenses opened the game strong while neither team scored in the opening period. Minnesota Duluth struck first with a one-yard touchdown run to go up, 6-0, following a missed extra point. A field goal put BSU’s halftime deficit at 9-0 before making its comeback.

Anderson helped put Bemidji State on the board with a 19-yard touchdown reception from freshman quarterback Alec Ogden. Jones showcased his speed on the Beavers’ following offensive drive, catching a 66-yard strike from Ogden. The 13-12 lead was extended to 16-12 with a 35-yard field goal by senior Isaac Aanerud, which was set up by an 11-yard interception return by sophomore linebacker Gabe Ames.

Minnesota Duluth held on to the ball for over 13 minutes on its drive following Aanerud’s field goal before punching it in for a touchdown to regain the lead. Aanerud tied the game at 19-19 with his second 35-yard field goal of the night to force overtime.

Bemidji State started with the ball in overtime but came away with a missed field goal attempt. Minnesota Duluth followed on their possession with the same result, forcing a second overtime. The Bulldogs pushed in a touchdown from two-yards out on their next possession to force the Beavers to do the same. BSU saw back-to-back incompletions before a sack ended the game on fourth-and-17.

Senior defensive back Gunner Olszewski became BSU’s all-time leader in solo tackles during the game after finishing with 10 solo tackles and 14 total. Olszewski exited the game with 167 career solo tackles.

Jones finished his day with 175 receiving yards and one touchdown, followed by Anderson with 45 receiving yards and one touchdown. Senior quarterback Jared Henning and Ogden combined for 249 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Bemidji State returns to the road to face Wayne State College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 in Wayne, Neb. The game will be the first of the season against NSIC South Division opponents.
