First-half surge propels No. 1 Grand Valley State to win over BSU

Box Score

MANKATO, Minn. (The Pitch) -- Defending national champion Grand Valley State University stunned the Bemidji State University soccer team with a pair of goals during the first 14 minutes of play Friday and cruised to a 2-0. non-conference victory.

Chantel Carranza was first to get GVSU on the board netting a goal in the 13th minute and 77 seconds later the Lakers struck again to take a 2-0 lead when Caitie Barron found the back of the net.

The Beavers buckled down defensively for the final 75 minutes of play to keep GVSU from adding to its lead, but were unable to generate any sustained offensive push and logged just one shot on goal.

Freshman Alyssa Stumbaugh made her first collegiate start for BSU and collected three saves in 45 minutes of play, but was tagged with the loss after allowing both Laker goals. Emma Riedi relieved Stumbaugh and made four saves in 45 minutes of action.

The Beavers, now 1-1-0, return to action Sunday at 11 a.m. when they face No. 4 University of Central Missouri in a rematch of last fall's NCAA Central Regional semifinal. The top-20 match-up will be played at The Pitch on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.
