Beavers earn two wins on final day at Ferris State Invitational

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Bemidji State University volleyball team earned two wins on the final day of the Ferris State Invitational to improve its record to 3-1 after the opening weekend. The Beavers (3-1, 0-0 NSIC) began the day with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 27-25) sweep over Ohio Dominican University followed by a 3-2 (23-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-27, 15-9) win over McKendree University in the final match of the tournament.

The Beavers were led by junior Becky Schroeder who totaled 26 kills in both matches while junior Anna Averkamp followed with 25 kills.

The Beavers totaled 41 kills and committed just nine attack errors in the match against the Panthers for a season-high .314 hitting percentage. Schroeder led the Beavers with 12 kills and hit at a career-best .526 clip. Averkamp followed closely by totaling 11 kills and also hit a career-best .550 hitting percentage with 0 errors in 20 attacks. On defense, senior Emma Hallmann led the team with 14 digs while senior Julie Touchett led the team with three blocks.

In the second match of the day, the Beavers totaled a season-high 64 kills against the Bearcats while also hitting at a .197 clip. Bemidji State was led by Schroeder and Averkamp who each totaled 14 kills while sophomore Haley Stolt added 13 and earned 17 digs defensively for the double-double. Redshirt freshman Maddie Mackinac coordinated the Beavers’ attack and earned a career-best 52 assists in the match and also contributed four kills.

Senior Emma Hallmann totaled a match-high 20 digs while Touchett led the team with three blocks.

Bemidji State will continue the non-conference portion of its schedule and return to Minnesota to participate in the Huskies Classic at St. Cloud State University September 12-14. The Beavers will face St. Cloud State, Michigan Tech, South Dakota School of Mines and Wheeling Jesuit in the tournament.
