Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. (Chet Anderson Stadium) – Freshmen Emma Huelsnitz and Miah Olson each recorded goals and goalkeeper Alyssa Stumbaugh turned aside five shots to lead the Bemidji State University soccer team to a 2-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Augustana University Friday evening.
Despite the Vikings holding possession for the for a large portion of the first half, it was the Beavers who took the first lead of the match. BSU forced a corner kick in the fifth minute. Maggie Cade served up a ball on the back post where Emma Huelsnitz headed in the first goal of her collegiate career.
Leading 1-0, the Beavers added another goal in the 43rd minute of the play catching Augie in transition. Mariah Nguyen tipped a pass to fellow freshman Maria Stocke. Stocke then found Miah Olson open. Olson capitalized and found the back of the net with her first goal as a Beaver to put BSU up 2-0 at the break.
The second half belonged to the BSU defense. While the Beavers controlled play for long stretches of play, and out shot AU 14-7, Augie held a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The BSU back line kept the Vikings mostly at bay, but Stumbaugh was called on to make all five of her saves during the final 45 minutes.
Stumbaugh made her return to the lineup Friday netting her second shutout of the season and third of her BSU career to improve to 5-0-0.
Bemidji State (7-0-1; 4-0-1 NSIC) continues NSIC play Sunday as it welcomes Wayne State College to The Chet. Opening kick is set for 1 p.m.
