No. 6 Bemidji State earns 2-0 shutout at Minot State

Box Score

MINOT, N.D. (Herb Parker Stadium) -- Alyssa Stumbaugh stopped all three shots she faced, while Allyson Smith and Megan Carlson each scored to lead the Number 6 Bemidji State University soccer team to its 15th victory of the season, 2-0, at Minot State University, Sunday.

The victory preserves the Beavers' unbeaten season as the team improves to 15-0-2 on the year and 12-0-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play. The Beavers are now without a loss since Nov. 13, 2019--a streak spanning 20 matches to equal a program record. Just one win separates Head Coach Jim Stone and the Beavers from their second regular-season conference title.

It took BSU time to get into the flow of the match, but as the first half wound down, Beaver senior Smith took over. The Brainerd, Minn. native generated several scoring chances. In the 32nd minute, she found the back of the net to put the Beavers in the lead and net her fifth goal of the season. Anna Breffle was credited with an assist on the scoring play after collecting a loose ball, pushing it to Smith, who used her left foot to fire a bullet from 20 yards out to the upper left corner of the net.

Leading 1-0 to open the second half of play, the Beavers got a goal from Carlson in the 57th minute.  The freshman netted her second goal in the last four matches when she collected a turnover dribbled around a defender and found the upper-right 90 from 25 yards out.

MSU pressed late in the second and came within inches of cutting its deficit in half, but a shot skipped off the crossbar and the BSU defense took care of the rest.

With three saves, Stumbaugh earned her seventh shutout of the season and extended her shutout streak to 318:54 dating back to Oct. 17. She improves to 13-0-1 on the season.

The Beavers return home to Chet Anderson Stadium Friday to host the University of Minnesota Crookston (1-14-0) in the regular-season finale. The opening kick is set for 2 p.m.
