Bachmann reaches 1,000 career points in Beaver's rout of Vikings

BEMIDJI, Minn. (BSU Gymnasium) -- Bemidji State University women's basketball fifth-year senior Brooklyn Bachmann became the 21st student-athlete in program history to reach the 1,000-career point mark as the team took down Valley City State University, 79-46, Tuesday night at BSU Gymnasium.

Bachmann entered the night needing five points to reach the milestone and hit the mark with a layup just nine seconds into the second quarter. She finished the game with six points, five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and one steal while sophomore center Rachael Heittola led the squad with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting. Freshman forward Jana Swanson was the only other Beaver to reach double-digit scoring with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field and added eight rebounds.

In total, 13 Beavers recorded points and all 19 active players played at least four minutes.  

Heittola led the game off with the first basket on BSU's first possession before VCSU followed with a layup and 3-pointer for its only lead of the game. Senior guard Sydney Zerr book-ended a 9-0 run with two 3-pointers to give BSU an 11-5 lead midway through the first quarter. The Beavers missed its next seven shots before senior forward Claire Wolhowe hit a 3-pointer with 42 seconds to play.

Bachmann's career scoring moment began seven straight field goals made for the Beavers in the second quarter, which led to a 33-13 lead after four minutes of play. Bemidji State limited Valley City State to just one field goal during that span and outscored the Vikings, 30-15, in the second quarter.

Coming out of the halftime break with a 46-25 lead, the Bemidji State defense stood stout again and allowed just one field goal in the third quarter. Valley City State hit a 3-pointer and sank two free throws for its only points of the quarter as Bemidji State took a 61-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

Bemidji State shot 49.2 percent from the floor (31-63), 30.8 percent from beyond the arc (8-26) and 50.0 percent from the free throw line while Valley City State shot 25.0 percent from the field (17-68), 22.7 percent from 3-point range (5-22) and 33.3 percent from the charity stripe (7-21). The Beavers came down with 53 rebounds compared to 42 for the Vikings while BSU won the battle in the paint, 44-20.

Bemidji State returns to BSU Gymnasium Nov. 19-20 for a two-game weekend, beginning with the University of Minnesota-Morris at 6 p.m. Friday and ending with Northland College at 3 p.m. Saturday.
