Michigan Tech hangs on for 4-3 victory over Bemidji State

Box Score

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) – Tristan Ashbrook posted two goals and an assist to lead Michigan Tech to a 4-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Bemidji State University Friday.

The Beavers were led Lukas and Owen Sillinger, who each recorded a goal and an assist in the loss, while seven different players logged a point in the scorebook.

Just as it has so many times this season, BSU was quick to start and took an early lead. Just 4:09 into the game, Eric Martin found the back of the net with help from Lukas Sillinger and Will Magnuson, who contributed his first collegiate point on the play.

Michigan Tech bounced back to get a goal off the stick of Ashbrook midway through the first period to send the teams into the break locked in a 1-1 tie. The goal sparked a run of three straight goals by MTU that left BSU chasing the rest of the night. The Huskies added an even-strength goal at the at the 18:33 mark of the second, and a power-play goal by Ashbrook to take a 3-2 lead into the final 20 minutes. It was the Huskies' only power-play opportunity of the evening.

The Beavers opened the third period on the man advantage and used the opportunity to cut the Huskies' lead in half and set up an up-and-down period. BSU's leading scorer Owen Sillinger fired a shot that made its way through traffic and found the back of the net before the MTU goaltender, Blake Pietila even saw it. Ross Armour and Alex Ierullo were credited with assists on the play just 1:49 into the frame.

MTU got the goal back with 13:35 left in the game. When a Logan Pietila shot caromed off a BSU defender's skate, Tommy Parronttino was on the back door to collect the puck and jam it across the goal line.

Bemidji State answered with 9:37 left. Following a turnover by the Huskies, Elias Rosén and Owen Sillinger set up Lukas Sillinger for the sophomore's fourth goal of the season and second point of the night. The goal again pulled BSU to within one of the MTU lead.

BSU pulled goaltender Gavin Enright for an extra attacker with 1:22 left in the game. Despite a flurry of shots in front of the net during the final minute, Michigan Tech held on for the 4-3 win and handed BSU its fifth one-goal loss of the season.

In net, Enright was credited with 31 stops in the game, while he surrendered four goals.  He moves to 3-3-0 on the season.

The Beavers fall to 6-5-0 overall and 5-2-0 in league play. BSU will attempt to salvage a series split tomorrow when it hosts the Huskies to close out the weekend with a 6:07 p.m. start.
