Box Score BEMIDJI, Minn. – No. 1 University of Wisconsin used a four-goal first period to end the Bemidji State University women's hockey win streak at four games after downing the Beavers 5-1 Friday afternoon. Sophomore goaltender Hannah Hogenson totaled 49 saves and recorded an assist, her second of the season, to lead the Beavers while fifth-year senior Lydia Passolt tallied the lone goal.
Bemidji State falls to 6-9-2 on the season and 3-9-1 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play while the Badgers improve to 16-1-2 (12-1-2 WCHA).
Wisconsin opened the scoring 9:47 into the first period when Makenna Webster scored her Division I leading 15th goal of the season. Her goal was followed with another by Daryl Watts just 4:27 later to put the Badgers up two. Wisconsin got its third goal of the period with 3:59 left in the period when Sarah Wozniewicz tallied her ninth goal of the season and then went up 4-0 just before the period's end when Maddi Wheeler netted her ninth goal of the season with just 52 seconds remaining.
Bemidji State responded with a power-play goal from Passolt, her third of the season, that fooled goaltender Kennedy Blair just 3:52 into the middle frame. For the Beavers, it was their sixth power-play goal of the season and Passolt's first with the extra skater. Wisconsin responded later in the frame when Watts scored her second of the game 6:29 after BSU's goal.
Neither team was able to add another marker as Hogenson turned aside 18-of-18 shots in the third period while Blair stopped all seven of the Beavers' shots during the final frame.
Hogenson finished the game by stopping 49-of-54 shots but has her four-game win streak snapped and falls to 5-6-2 on the season. Blair finished with 18 saves on 19 shots and improves to 14-1-2 this season.
Bemidji State went 1-for-3 while on the power play while its penalty kill denied the Badgers on their two attempts during the game.
The Beavers and Badgers conclude their league series tomorrow afternoon when the two teams meet for game two at 2:01 p.m.
