Beavers' penalty kill strong but No.1 Badgers earn series sweep

MADISON, Wis. – The Bemidji State University women's hockey team's penalty kill successfully killed off all seven of No. 1 University of Wisconsin's power plays Saturday afternoon but the Badgers scored seven even-strength goals to earn the Western Collegiate Hockey Association series sweep.

Wisconsin opened the scoring just 6:08 into the first period when Makenna Webster scored her second goal of the series and fourth of the season. Bemidji State was chasing the puck throughout the period and took three penalties during the period. The Beavers' penalty kill was strong however and successfully killed all three Badger power plays.

The Badgers gained a 2-0 advantage in the second period when Sophie Shirley scored her eighth goal of the season 8:12 into the middle frame. Wisconsin scored once again during the period when freshman Lacey Eden scored a 3-on-3 goal 13:34 into the period. Bemidji State's penalty kill success continued during the period and killed off three Badger power plays during the second period.

Wisconsin ended the game strong and fired off for four goals in the final 20 minutes to earn the 7-0 victory.

Bemidji State senior goaltender Kerigan Dowhy played 43:57 and allowed four goals on 27 shots to fall to 2-11-2 on the season while freshman Hannah Hogenson came in relief in the third period and played 16:03 and allowed three goals on nine shots. 

Bemidji State was outshot 36-6 in the game.

The Beavers fall to 2-12-2 (2-12-2 WCHA) on the season while the Badgers improve to 11-2-1 (11-2-1 WCHA).

Bemidji State returns home for a two-week homestand to end the regular season and will host No. 2 University of Minnesota next weekend.
