HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bemidji State University Men's Hockey team earned two points after skating to a 2-2 tie and earning the shootout victory at (RV) Michigan Tech Saturday night in game two of their Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.
Â
Freshman
Lleyton Roed and fifth-year transfer
Mitchell Martan both scored for the Beavers (2-1-1, 1-0-1 CCHA) and junior transfer
Jackson Jutting scored the winning goal in the shootout to earn the Beavers five-of-six points over the weekend.
Â
Martan started the scoring for the Beavers and scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season just before the first period ended at 1:24.
Â
Following the first intermission, Roed scored his third goal of the weekend after forcing a turnover and beat goaltender Max Vayrynen glove side.
Â
Leading by two heading into the third period, both teams new the next goal would be the most important. It would be the Huskies (2-2-1, 0-1-1 CCHA) however, when Kyle Kukkonen scored with 7:24 remaining while on the power play. Just as it looked the Beavers would escape with the 2-1 victory, Michigan Tech would earn a late power-play opportunity and it would be Kukkonen again who found a loose puck in front of goaltender
Mattias Sholl and tied the game with just 53 seconds remaining.
Â
After a back-and-forth three-on-three overtime period where both goaltenders denied multiple grade-A chances, Each team would earn a point after failing to score during the extra period and headed to the shootout.
Â
Each team's first two skaters would fail to score in the first two rounds of the shootout then BSU's Martan put the Beavers up 1-0 but Michigan Tech's Logan Pietila answered back to tie.
Â
After another round of misses, Jutting was up next and beat Vayrynen glove side to retake the lead. On the ensuing attempt by Huskies' Nick Nardella, he missed the tying goal by inches after hitting the right post and the Beavers would claim the 2-1 victory in the shootout.
Â
Bemidji State finished the game with 26 shots on goal while Michigan Tech totaled 25.
Â
Sholl made 23 saves and is now 1-1-1 on the season while Vayrynen moves to 0-0-1 in his first career start and appearance after making 24 saves.
Â
The Beavers earned two power-play opportunities but failed to score on each attempt while the Huskies earned five power plays and scored the two power-play goals.
Â
