BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a 60-43 victory over Valley City State University Friday night at BSU Gymnasium. Fifth-year senior
Trinity Yoder led the Beavers (1-0) in points with 11 after shooting 4-for-11 from the field and 3-for-6 from the free throw line.
The Beavers and Vikings (4-2) were inseparable in the first half with the largest lead only being six. Yoder scored the first points of the season coming 30 seconds into the game. Both teams were able to connect on four shots in the first quarter and BSU went 4-for-4 from the line giving them the 12-10 lead going into the second quarter. With 4:33 to go in the half, the Vikings took their only lead in the contest and held it for just under two minutes before a Yoder layup put the Beavers back on top. When the second half started, the Beavers came back hot finishing the third quarter with a 13-point run. In the fourth quarter BSU kept the momentum rolling finishing with a 17-point win.
Almost every Beaver who saw the court was able to contribute to the 60-point victory. Ten student athletes were able to connect on their shots. Behind Yoder in points was sophomore
Sam Pogatchnik putting a career high of 10 and senior Megan Majewski breaking her career-high of points with eight. BSU went 22-for-61 (.361) from the field, 5-for-24 (.208) from behind the arch and 11-for-16 (.688) at the free throw line.
Both teams were able to come away with over 40 rebounds a-piece with BSU out rebounding VCSU 46-41. In her Beaver debut, freshman Alyssa Hill snagged 10 missed shots with three being on the offensive side. Freshman Brooke Theis also made her presence felt on the boards by coming away with nine rebounds.
The Beavers will continue their home opening weekend Monday as they take on Mayville State University at 6 p.m., right back at BSU Gymnasium.
