Bemidji hosts Valley City and Mayville State for 2022-23 season opener

Beavers tip-off season against Valley City State and Mayville State

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Bemidji State University women's basketball opens the 2022-23 season as the Beavers host Valley City State University and Mayville State University this weekend at BSU Gymnasium. BSU starts the season against VCSU at 6 p.m., Friday followed by MSU Monday at 6 p.m. 
 
The Series vs Valley City State
  • Bemidji State leads the all-time series against Valley City State, 4-2.
  • The Beavers and Vikings last met Nov. 16, 2021, a 79-46 win by BSU in Bemidji.
  • BSU leads the series when played in Bemidji, 3-1, 
  • Bemidji State and Valley City State first met Jan. 6, 2015, a 73-54 win by BSU.
 
The Series vs Mayville State
  • Bemidji State leads the all-time series against Mayville State, 16-2.
  • The Beavers and Comets last met Nov. 13, 2021, a 79-51 win by BSU in Bemidji.
  • BSU leads the series when played in Bemidji, 14-0,
  • Bemidji State and Mayville State first met Dec. 11, 1991, an 85-73 win by MSU.
 
Fast Break Bemidji State
  • The Beavers finished last season with a record of 14-13 and 11-10 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play and made the quarterfinals of the NSIC tournament.
  • BSU was selected to finish 10th overall in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll and sixth in the NSIC North Division Poll. The Beavers totaled 98 points in the overall poll and 19 points in the divisional in the 2022-23 NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • In season and home openers, the Beavers are 5-2 under head coach Chelsea Stoltenberg.
  • BSU has one returning starter in Trinity Yoder with 12 other returners and four new comers.
  • The 14-win season was the best since the 2006-07 season.
  • Last season, BSU ranked third in the league in field goal percentage (43.6%), second in 3-point field goal percentage (34.0%) and seventh in scoring offense (67.6 ppg) and defense (65.2 ppg).
  • Trinity Yoder is returning to the team after being named NSIC All Conference in her 2021-22 season. Yoder was able to record her 1000th career point on Jan. 29 last season. She was second on the team in point (12.9 ppg) and rebounds (5.1 rpg) and led the team in steal with 55 on the season.
 
Scouting Valley City State
 
  • Head Coach Vanessa Johnson starts her sixth season with the Vikings (73-62).
  • Valley City State (4-1) most recently took a 67-63 victory over Mount Marty University after falling to No. 12 Dakota Wesleyan University 65-52 the day before.
  • VCSU averages 72.4.0 points per game and allow 50.4 points while shooting 39.1 percent from the field. The Vikings almost double their opponents' rebounds averaging 51.8 to their 31.2
  • Sophomore guard Ashlyn Diemert leads the Vikings averaging 10.7 points per game.
 
Scouting Mayville State 
 
  • The Comets are led by 17th-year head coach Dennis Hutter who is 151-69 with the program.
  • MSU (2-1) won big in their last two games against Providence University College 97-28 and 103-27 last weekend.
  • The Comets average 88.0 points and allow 42.7 points per game shooting 47.3 percent from the field. 
  • Senior guard Jordan Zurst leads MSU averaging 18.0 points per game and 9.7 rebounds. Zurst has recorded two double-doubles in the first three games of the season
