Falcons upend Beavers in game one of CCHA Quarterfinals

Box Score

BEMIDJI, Minn. - Bowling Green State University earned a 2-1 victory over the Bemidji State University men's hockey team in game one of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Quarterfinals Friday night at Sanford Center. Senior forward Owen Sillinger scored the lone goal for the Beavers to record his 42nd point of the season and break the program's Division I record for most points in a single season.

Sillinger breaks the record previously set by Bemidji State men's hockey great Matt Ready who totaled 41 points during the 2009-10 season.

Bowling Green started the scoring in the first period when Ryan O'Hara shot the puck from the top of the slot and it deflected off a BSU defender and past goaltender Mattias Sholl with just 5:16 to play in the opening frame. The Beavers answered right back and with just 2:46 to play in the first period, Sillinger received a back-door pass from Alex Ierullo to score his 15th goal of the season and become the program's single season record holder.

After a scoreless second period, both teams knew they would be in for a tight third period and it turned out to be. Neither team would be willing to surrender the go-ahead goal but with 8:12 to play, Bowling Green's Brayden Krieger stole the puck from the BSU defense and scored off his own rebounded shot for the unassisted, go-ahead goal. The Beavers would claw at the Falcons' defense to score the equalizing goal and pulled Sholl with 3:13 to play. However, Bemidji State would be unable to score the tying goal and fell 2-1 in the game.

Bemidji State totaled 27 shots in the game compared to 25 for Bowling Green while Sholl stopped 23-of-25 shots to fall to 10-12-0 this season. Falcons goaltender Christian Stoever turned aside 26-of-27 shots and improved to 9-16-1.

Neither team earned a power play in the game.

Bemidji State will be in a do-or-die situation tomorrow night and will face elimination from the CCHA Playoffs and the end to its season and Bowling Green will look to clinch the best-of-three series. The Beavers and Falcons will drop the puck for game two at 6:07 p.m., at Sanford Center.

Nestled in Northern Minnesota's wooden region and located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, BSU sponsors 15 varsity athletic programs with NCAA Division I men's hockey in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and women's hockey in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while its 13 NCAA Division II programs hold membership in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
