Bemidji State starts 2023 calendar year by hosting Northland College

BSU steps away from conference games to host Northland College

BEMIDJI, Minn. – Bemidji State University men's basketball team host Northland College in its first game of the 2023 calendar year on Monday at the BSU Gymnasium. The Beavers take a step away from Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action to play Northland with a 6 p.m. tip-off but, will turn to conference games this weekend.
 
The Series vs Northland
  • Bemidji State leads the all-time series against Northland, 48-7.
  • The Beavers and the Lumberjacks last met Nov. 20, 2021, a 110-61 win by BSU in Bemidji, Minn.
  • BSU leads when played in Bemidji 30-1.
  • Bemidji State and Northland first met Dec. 5, 1941, with a 62-31 win by BSU.
 
 
Fast Break Bemidji State
  • BSU is currently on a three-game winning streak after defeating University of Mary and Minot State University on Dec 30-31.
  • The Beavers started the weekend beating Mary 77-67 then followed it up with a win over Minot State 81-73 on New Year's Eve
  • Bemidji State shot north of .500 in its two previous games bringing its season average to .500 on the dot.
  • John Sutherland put on two strong performances converting on 77% of his 30 shots for 51 points.
  • Sutherland recorded his third double-double of the season against Minot State with 25 points and 12 rebounds.
  • The Beavers were dominate in the paint scoring 86 points with 63 rebounds in the last two games.
  • The big men in Dalton Albrecht and Sutherland have had to most success this season so far both tallied over 200 points in the first 13 games, Sutherland is leading the team with 216 while only playing in 11 games.
  • Sutherland is also leading the team in rebounds with 93 averaging 8.5 per game with 19 in the last two games. Sutherland inches closer to second in the conference only 0.4 rpg behind Nick Reid of Upper Iowa University. 
  • Brayden Williams is the new assist leader for the Beavers with 41 passing Mohamed Kone who has 40. The pair combined on 12 assists on the weekend and rank 13th and 14th in the NSIC respectively.
  • Bemidji State is tied for third in the NSIC with scoring offense averaging 80.4 points per game and is 12th in scoring defense allowing 76.9 ppg. 
  • BSU increase its first-place lead in NSIC for field goal percentage now at 50.0% but, are 13th for opponent field goal percentage with 46.7%.
  • The Beavers are 15th in turnovers and are 13th in assist to turnover ratio with a 1.03 ratio.
 
Scouting Northland
 
  • Coaching his 11th season for the Lumberjacks is Scott Sorenson.
  • Northland are 3-8 on the season, dropping its last game 60-81 to University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Dec. 29. 
  • NC average 66.7 points per game shooting 40.5% and 32.9% from behind the arc.
  • Jordan Brennan leads the Lumberjacks in scoring with 152 points in 11 games with his best game coming against College of St. Scholastica dropping 27 points.
